Diesel engine can blast if Crankcase pressure is High

Yes, there is a potential relation between maintaining negative Crankcase Over Pressure (COP) and engine safety, including the prevention of engine failures or "engine blast."

When the COP is excessively positive (positive pressure in the crankcase), several issues can arise that might contribute to engine failures or catastrophic events like an "engine blast":

1. Oil Leaks: High COP can cause increased pressure inside the crankcase, forcing oil past seals and gaskets, leading to oil leaks. Leaked oil can reach hot engine components, creating a fire hazard.

2. Piston Ring Failure: Excessive COP can lead to increased blow-by, where combustion gases leak past the piston rings and enter the crankcase. This can result in poor engine performance, increased oil consumption, and potential damage to the piston rings.

3. Hydrolock: If enough unburned fuel and exhaust gases accumulate in the crankcase due to high COP, it can lead to a condition known as hydrolock. Hydrolock occurs when the crankcase becomes filled with fuel or other fluids, preventing the engine from turning over properly, which can cause damage to internal components.

4. Stress on Engine Components: High COP can put additional stress on various engine components, such as piston rings, connecting rods, and crankshaft bearings. This stress can accelerate wear and potentially lead to engine failures.

5. Engine Overheating: High COP can lead to increased friction and heat generation in the engine, potentially leading to overheating and subsequent engine failures

6. Combustion Chamber Problems: If COP is not well-regulated, it can affect the air-fuel mixture and combustion process, leading to abnormal combustion, detonation, or pre-ignition, all of which can cause engine damage or failure.

To avoid these potential issues and enhance engine safety, maintaining a slightly negative COP or close to atmospheric pressure is recommended. This can be achieved through proper design and functioning of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system, which ensures the controlled venting of crankcase gases and helps maintain a healthy operating environment for the engine. Regular maintenance, adherence to manufacturer guidelines, and monitoring COP levels can help prevent potential engine failures and maintain the engine's overall safety and performance.
